4 Requirements for PFML Eligibility

1. Minimum Earnings

You must have earned at least $6,750 in covered wages during your base period.

  • Base period = first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters
  • Wages from all covered employers count
  • Includes bonuses, commissions, and tips

2. Weeks Worked

You must have worked at least 17 weeks during your base period.

  • Any week with earned wages counts
  • Hours per week don't matter, just that you worked
  • Weeks can be with different employers

3. Employment Status

You must be currently employed or have qualifying work history in Minnesota.

  • Full-time or part-time employment qualifies
  • Multiple jobs can be combined
  • Self-employed who opted in are eligible

4. Qualifying Reason

Your leave must be for one of the covered reasons under Minnesota PFML.

  • Bonding with new child (birth, adoption, foster)
  • Caring for family member with serious health condition
  • Your own serious health condition

Special Situations

How eligibility works in unique circumstances

Self-Employed Workers

Self-employed individuals must opt into the Minnesota PFML program to be eligible. Here's what you need to know:

  • Register with Minnesota DEED and elect coverage
  • Pay premiums for at least 4 consecutive quarters before taking leave
  • Premiums are based on your net self-employment income
  • Once opted in, you must stay in the program for at least 3 years
