Finding the Right Health Insurance

Choosing health insurance doesn't have to be overwhelming. We've made it simple to understand your options, get personalized recommendations, and make a confident decision.

Step 1: Tell Us About Yourself (The Health Questionnaire)

Why This Matters

The right health plan depends entirely on YOUR situation — your family size, health conditions, medications, and how often you see doctors. By answering a few simple questions, you help us find plans that actually fit your life, not just generic recommendations.

The Questions We Ask (Takes About 5 Minutes)

  1. How many people need coverage? Just you? You and a spouse? A whole family? This affects which plans make sense and how much you'll pay.
  2. How would you describe your overall health? Are you generally healthy, managing some conditions, or dealing with significant health issues? Be honest — this helps us find plans that cover what you actually need.
  3. How often do you typically see doctors? Rarely? A few times a year? Frequently? This helps us estimate your real costs under different plans.
  4. Do you take regular medications? None, a few, or several? Prescription drug coverage varies wildly between plans, so this is important.
  5. What's most important to you — lower monthly cost or lower out-of-pocket costs? Some people prefer paying less each month even if they pay more when they use care. Others want to know their costs are capped. There's no wrong answer!
  6. How old are you? (Optional) This helps us calculate accurate premium estimates, since costs vary by age.
  7. Are you interested in a Health Savings Account (HSA)? (Optional) HSAs let you save money tax-free for healthcare. If you're interested, we'll prioritize HSA-eligible plans.
  8. Do you use tobacco? This affects your premium costs, so we need to know for accurate estimates.

What Happens After You Answer

Example: What a Recommendation Looks Like

Match Score: 9/10
"Based on your couple household, moderate health needs, and preference for predictable costs, we recommend the Blue Cross Gold Plus plan. This plan offers low copays for your frequent doctor visits ($25 per visit instead of the average $40), excellent prescription coverage for your 3 monthly medications, and a reasonable $2,500 deductible. Your estimated annual cost: $8,400 including premiums and expected out-of-pocket expenses."

Step 2: Browse All Available Plans

Want to see everything that's available? Our Plans page shows you all 50+ health insurance options with easy ways to find what you're looking for:

Search & Filter Options

What You See for Each Plan

Click Any Plan for Full Details

When you click on a plan, you'll see everything you need to know:

🎯 Understanding Metal Tiers

Bronze: Lowest monthly cost, but you pay more when you need care. Best if you're healthy and rarely use healthcare.

Silver: Moderate monthly cost and out-of-pocket costs. A balanced choice for most people.

Gold: Higher monthly cost, but lower costs when you need care. Great if you use healthcare regularly.

Platinum: Highest monthly cost, but the lowest out-of-pocket costs. Best if you have significant ongoing health needs.

Understanding & Using Paid Family Leave

Minnesota's new Paid Family and Medical Leave program starts January 1, 2026. This means you can take time off for important life events — and still get paid. We help you understand exactly what you're entitled to.

What is Paid Family Leave?

Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) is a state program that provides wage replacement when you need time off for qualifying reasons. Think of it as insurance that helps you take care of yourself and your family without losing your income.

When Can You Use Paid Family Leave?

👶 Bonding Leave
Up to 12 weeks
For new parents
  • Birth of a child
  • Adoption of a child
  • Foster care placement
  • Both parents can take it
🏥 Medical Leave
Up to 12 weeks
For your own health
  • Serious health condition
  • Surgery recovery
  • Chronic illness management
  • Pregnancy-related conditions
❤️ Family Care Leave
Up to 12 weeks
To care for loved ones

  • Care for sick parent
  • Other family members
🛡️ Safety Leave
Up to 12 weeks
For safety situations
  • Domestic violence situations
  • Stalking situations
  • Sexual assault recovery
  • Related legal matters

⚠️ Important: 20-Week Combined Maximum

While each leave type allows up to 12 weeks, you can only take a total of 20 weeks of paid leave per year across all types combined. For example, if you take 12 weeks for a new baby, you'd have 8 weeks remaining if you needed medical leave later that year.

How Much Will You Get Paid?

The program replaces a portion of your wages using a formula that gives lower-income workers a higher percentage:

Using the Benefit Calculator

  1. Enter your annual salary Just type in your yearly earnings. We'll automatically show your weekly wage too.
  2. Select your leave type Choose from bonding, medical, family care, or safety leave.
  3. Tell us if you've used leave this year If you've already taken PFML leave, check the box and enter how many weeks. This affects how much time you have remaining.
  4. Choose how many weeks you need Use the slider to select 1-12 weeks (or less if you've already used some).
  5. Click "Calculate My Benefits" Instantly see exactly how much you'll receive!

What Your Results Show

Example Calculation

Annual Salary: $65,000 ($1,250/week)
Leave Type: Bonding leave (new baby)
Duration: 12 weeks

Weekly Benefit: $1,153.50 (about 92% of your normal pay)
Total for 12 Weeks: $13,842

Tracking Your Leave

The Leave Tracker helps you plan and monitor your time off:

Asking Questions About the Law

Not sure if something qualifies or how a rule applies to your situation? Ask our AI assistant:

"Am I eligible for PFML?"

Learn the eligibility requirements and whether you meet them.

"Can my employer deny my leave request?"

Understand your rights and your employer's obligations.

"What counts as a serious health condition?"

Learn what medical situations qualify for leave.

"How do I apply for bonding leave?"

Get step-by-step guidance on the application process.

Every answer includes references to the actual Minnesota law, so you can be confident the information is accurate.

Common Terms People Search

Deductible

The amount you pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to pay. For example, with a $2,000 deductible, you pay the first $2,000 of covered services yourself. After you pay your deductible, you usually pay only a copayment or coinsurance for covered services.

Out-of-Pocket Maximum

The most you have to pay for covered services in a plan year. After you spend this amount on deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, your health plan pays 100% of the costs of covered benefits. This is your financial safety net — no matter what happens, you won't pay more than this amount.

Premium

The amount you pay for your health insurance every month. You pay this whether or not you use medical services. Think of it like a membership fee that keeps your coverage active.

Coinsurance

Your share of the costs of a covered health care service, calculated as a percentage. For example, if your coinsurance is 20%, you pay 20% of the cost and your insurance pays 80%. This kicks in after you've met your deductible.

Copayment (Copay)

A fixed amount you pay for a covered health care service after you've paid your deductible. For example, you might pay $25 for a doctor visit or $10 for a prescription. The amount can vary by the type of service.
